Death & Impermanence:
Meditate

Five-Point Meditation on Death and Impermanence

Consider how everything changes; nothing stays the same.

  • Change in the world around us,
  • Change in the body
  • Change in personality and world view

Reflect on the many who have died.

  • Previous civilizations, at their highest, at their lowest, and in between
  • People with exceptional abilities or accomplishments
  • Your own family and ancestors

Again and again, reflect on the many causes of death.

  • How many ways could you die in the course of a typical day?
  • How many everyday objects could cause your death?
  • When can you be sure you will not die?

What happens when I die?

  • Dying of old age
  • Dying of a terminal disease
  • Dying in an accident

What happens after I die?

  • To your body
  • To your possessions
  • To your role in family, work, and society
