Karma, Pattern-Based Existence:
Meditation

There are three meditations in this section:
  • How a patterned behavior is based on an imperative
  • How a patterned behavior pervades your life
  • How a patterned behavior shapes your life

How a patterned behavior is based on an imperative

  • Choose a pattern of behavior that causes you difficulty in your life
  • Push on the pattern by imagining that you act differently from how you usually act when this pattern runs
  • Observe what sensations arise in your body, what emotions come up, and what thoughts, associations or stories come to mind when you imagine acting differently
  • Try to identify how all these reactions are organized around an imperative of the form:
    • "must have this, can't have that" or
    • "must be this way, can't be that way"
  • Observe how the secondary reactions all operate in service to the imperative
How a patterned behavior pervades your life
  • How does the pattern and the imperative take expression in:
    • How you learn
    • The kind of work you do
    • How you work
    • How you interact with people at work
    • What you do for fun and enjoyment
    • How you interact with your family
    • Your spiritual practice
How a patterned behavior shapes your life
  • Pick a patterned behavior in you that causes pain or difficulty for others
    • What emotions do you experience when you are in the pattern of behavior?
    • What do you gain from the patterned behavior?
    • How does the behavior affect the way others see you over time?
    • How does it affect the way you see the world?
  • Do the same for a behavior that is helpful to others
